In Search of Indie – 2019 Episode 2
Updated: Jul 8, 2019
Gallery Bookshop and Bookwinkle’s Children’s Books (Mendocino, CA)
Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, on a gray cloudy day or beautiful sunshine, if you find yourself exploring the town of Mendocino, you will find yourself in the Gallery Bookshop. For over 50 years, this Indie bookstore has been part of this historical community. What is unique about this bookstore? According to employee Molly, “you can’t beat the view!” Nothing but the Pacific Ocean and coastline.
You also can’t beat the variety of books, including books on the beauty and splendor of Mendocino County and northern California coast. Locals and vacationers alike find what they are looking for. Through a recent acquisition of the kitchenware store next door, they have expanded their space and their delightful cookbook selection. Bookwinkle’s Children’s Books fills the back of the store. Pick up a book, get comfy on a bench with your child and enjoy a moment lost in a story. You’ll walk out with more than one book for sure. To our delight, Molly also explained that employees and readers are encouraged to leave a brief book review, which is posted by the book. I like to know what others think of a book, and this is such a special touch. I’ve come back to this wonderful book store over the years of vacationing in the Fort Bragg area, and I’m sure you will find it to be a treasure that you enjoy and want to come back to time and time again.
When you finish your purchases at Gallery Bookshop, be sure to visit Out of This World across the street. Binoculars, telescopes and games. The informative staff helped us pick out a game and a small hand-pumped nerf rocket (hmmm…not sure if this was for Papa or our grandson or both).
Never been to Mendocino and Fort Bragg area? You are missing a bit of heaven – redwood trees, ocean views, whale watching, tidepool exploring, hiking, canoeing, great eats and walks along the many beaches. Add this location to your bucket list!
When on a vacation, what do you like to read?
